Oriental Rugs and loose woven rugs should not be cleaned on location like wall to wall carpet.

We will pick your rug up and bring it to our special cleaning plant. Having your rug cleaned in our plant allows us to give it several treatments for a more thorough cleaning, controlled drying, and the use of various tools that are not available on location.

Here are the steps we’ll carefully take to ensure that your rugs come out looking brand new.

Step 1: Pre-Inspection and Pick Up

We will determine as much as we possibly can about the type of rug and inherent qualities that may affect cleaning. We will outline the expected results and cleaning “prescription”. Our company will come to your home to pick up your rug, or you may drop it by our shop.

Step 2: Dry Soil Removal

Woven rugs, especially hand-knotted rugs are designed to hide dry soil. A few years ago, the Eureka company did a study and found that a 9 x 12 could hide 87 pounds of dirt! WOW! We use a variety of techniques to “dust” the rugs from the front and back. A machine called a pile lifter, special vacuum attachments, and any many other methods are implemented. This is the most important step in cleaning any textile.

Step 3: Pre-Condition

Depending on fiber content and soiling type, the rug will be pre-treated to emulsify the soils.

Step 4: Pre-Spot and Fringe Preparation

Any potentially difficult spots will be pre-treated with special solutions to increase chances of removal. The fringe is also pre-treated for maximum soil removal.

Step 5: Shampoo

Depending on fiber content and soiling type, the rug will be pre-treated to emulsify the soils. Most rugs are cleaned with an Oriental Rug Shampoo that is specially designed to get maximum cleaning while protecting sensitive natural fibers.

Step 6: Rinse or Wash

Depending on the type of rug it will be rinsed with extraction equipment on both sides or washed in a wash pit designed especially for Oriental Rugs.

Step 7: Speed Dry

Once the soil is rinsed away, the rug is dried flat or hung to dry in a controlled environment. Proper drying is essential to avoid unnatural shrinkage.

Step 8: Finishing

When the rug is dry, it is combed and finished with soft groomers made for specialty rugs.

Step 9: Post Inspection and Delivery

Our cleaning specialist will give the rug a final inspection and release it for pickup or delivery. Your rug will be wrapped in brown craft paper to protect it from dust and environmental soils until it is picked up or delivered. Upon delivery, we will lay the rug for you.

Two Common Errors to Avoid When Cleaning Your Rug

Rug cleaning can be a demanding task as you would need to do it right in order to keep your rug looking clean and beautiful. What good is having a rug for aesthetic purposes when it becomes dirty and filthy. Some owners prefer to clean their own rugs but although this can save them some money it can put their rugs at risk if they do not know the correct method or if they make costly mistakes. Some of these errors are fairly simple yet many still fall victim to it to the detriment of their rugs. To give you a heads up, here are some of the most common rug cleaning errors that you should try to avoid.

  1. Cleaning the Rug Only When It Looks Dirty – One big error that many rug owners are guilty of is cleaning the rug only when it looks dirty. Many do not mind vacuuming or washing the rug unless it visibly looks dirty. Some think that if it looks clean that everything is okay and there’s no further action needed. Well, this is just a big misconception which can cause damage to your rug. Dust, dirt, fungi, bacteria, and a lot of other cleaning hazards can still be on your rug even if its not visible to the naked eye. Not cleaning it up can lead to it building up and slowly damaging your rug. It also makes it even harder to clean up after. That’s why cleaning your rug regularly, regardless if it still looks clean, should be a habit you should practice.
  2. Not Checking the Cleaning Instructions – This might be one of the most  common mistake that owners have when cleaning their rugs. It is not easy to disregard that important pamphlet or guidebook which shows you the proper instructions on how to clean your rug. This though can have disastrous consequences as not knowing the right way to clean your rug can result in you needing to shop for a new one. Damaging or ruining your rug accidentally by using the wrong cleaning method or cleaning product is a big mistake but can easily be avoided. This is why it is recommended that you check with the instructions manual or talk to the sales representative when shopping for your rug.

Rugs are beautiful and eye-catching when it is clean and fresh which is why you need to pay proper attention to it. Take note of the common mistakes above and make the right precautionary measures so that you can easily avoid it and the unfortunate consequences that it may have on your rug.
